Plumb

A writing style checker for Microsoft Word

Write in the style you mean.

Plumb scores every sentence of your document against the style you are aiming for, colours the ones that drift, and suggests rewrites that keep your facts.

Three steps, inside Word

  1. Choose a style

Ten built in, from academic and business to legal drafting, Gothic fiction and plain language — or one you built from your own writing.

  2. Press Calculate

Every sentence or paragraph gets a score from 0 to 100 and a colour in your document, so the weak ones stand out on the page.

  3. Improve what scores low Plumb Plus

Pick a sentence and Plumb suggests two rewrites in the target style, each scored the same way as your document.

What Plumb does

Ten built-in styles

Each score answers one question: how closely does this read like that style? A sentence can be close to several at once, and you see the three nearest. Two of the ten are rule sets, scored by the rules they keep.

Rewrites in your target style Plumb Plus

Pick a sentence and Plumb rewrites it in the style you are aiming for. The register changes; the suggestions are written to keep what your sentence says, and every name in it. Each one is scored the same way as your document, so you see how much closer it reads before you accept it.

Your sentence · Academic

The results were kind of surprising, honestly.

Score: 57 Partial
Suggestion

The findings produced a degree of surprise.

Score: 100 Strong · same meaning, academic register

Your own style, learnt from documents or books of your choice

Love the way a favourite author writes? Give Plumb their book, or your best reports, or your house style's examples, as a Word document, a PDF or a plain-text file. It learns how that writing reads, then scores your sentences against it and, with Plumb Plus, suggests rewrites in that voice. The learning and the scoring happen on your device.

Gothic — learnt from the books of Shelley, Poe, Stoker and Le Fanu

The old house at the end of our street has been empty for years.

Your sentence · Gothic 68 Partial

The decrepit house at the end of our thoroughfare has, for countless years, stood abandoned, its shadows whispering secrets of decay.

Suggestion · Gothic 100 Strong

Rules in plain English

Describe the rules — "no weasel words", "under 30 words a sentence" — and Plumb gives every sentence a rule compliance. With Plumb Plus, it drafts the rule set from your description, and writes its suggestions to obey the rules.

Example rule set
  • No clutter phrases (“due to the fact that” → “because”)
  • No weasel words (“significantly better”, “should result in”)
  • No claim without supporting data
  • Few adjectives and adverbs
  • No more than 30 words

Due to the fact that the redesign is significantly better, it should result in higher sales.

Private by design

Scoring runs on your own device. No account, no upload, no server reading your document. Text leaves it only when you ask for a rewrite or a rule draft, and goes to OpenAI — through Plumb's service with Plumb Plus, which keeps none of it. What is sent.

  • Nothing uploaded to score

Install Plumb

Plumb is not yet in Microsoft's add-in store. Until it is, you add it to Word yourself from one file — it takes a minute.

You need: Word 2021 or later, or Microsoft 365, on Windows; Word for Mac 15.32 or later; or Word on the web. The first time it opens, Plumb downloads its language model (about 35 MB), once.

Download plumb.xml

Word on the web

  1. Open a document at office.com.
  2. Go to Home → Add-ins → More Add-ins.
  3. Choose My Add-ins → Upload My Add-in, and pick plumb.xml.
  4. Plumb appears on the Home tab.

Word on Windows

  1. Put plumb.xml in a folder and share it on your network (a \\computer\share path, not C:\…).
  2. In Word: File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Trusted Add-in Catalogs. Add the share's path, tick Show in Menu, and restart Word.
  3. Go to Home → Add-ins → More Add-ins → Shared Folder, and add Plumb.

On a Mac, use Word on the web for now: these steps have not yet been tried in Word for Mac.
